Things to look forward to in 2021

2020 has been a year of delays and postponements for most industries including the entertainment industry.

It’s tough not having anything to look forward to and COVID-19 has definitely got in the way of that in 2020.

With most of us staying at home a lot more than usual, we have missed out on all the latest movie releases due to the cinemas being closed (and still are unfortunately). However, there is a silver lining to this, meaning 2021 is going to be a huge year for new movies and TV shows, including those that have been delayed due to the pandemic.

As we enter into the new year, there are many reasons to be excited for 2021.

With the new year comes all kinds of new entertainment to look forward to - so check out our breakdown of just a few of the TV shows and movies to look forward to in 2021.

Black Widow

The Marvel film we’ve all been waiting for. Only one year behind schedule, Black Widow will now be released on 7th May 2021. This action-packed spy thriller stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka “Black Widow”. Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger as she confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises.

WandaVision

At the start of December, Disney dropped a huge amount of announcements with new details about the different Marvel projects that they’re working on at the moment. One of them being, WandaVision which is due to start streaming on Disney+ in January 2021. Wanda Maximoff and Vision are our central characters played by Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as well as some other familiar names making a return too.

The Falcon and Winter Soldier

A series we never knew we needed until now. The new series stars Marvel’s beloved Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). All we know so far is that the series is made up of six episodes and will take us on a journey with Sam and Bucky as they take on their newest challenge since Endgame.

This series is set to start streaming on Disney + on the 19th March 2021.

Loki

Well it’s about time our favourite troublemaker got his time to shine! Loki (Tom Hiddleston) steps into the spotlight with his own series continuing on from the events of Avengers: Endgame. After stealing the Tesseract, Loki travels through time and space to find himself getting involved with mysterious organisation The TVA.

We don’t have a set release date yet but this series is definitely worth waiting for. We’ve waited this long already, another few months won’t hurt right?

Hawkeye

Exciting news! Brand new Hawkeye adventures will be making their way to our screens in late 2021. The new series is set to star Jeremy Runner as Hawkeye and Hailee Steinfield as Kate Bishop.  All we know so far about the main plot is that it occurs after the events of Avengers: Endgame and will centre around Clint Barton and Kate Bishop and their connection to the ‘Hawkeye’ title.

Can you believe that 2021 is going to be the year that we are BLESSED with a sequel to the 90s classic- Space Jam??? You heard right, Space Jam: A New Legacy is set to be released on July 16, 2021.

This time around, the movie stars basketball legend, LeBron James who finds himself in the world of Looney Tunes Characters. The 90s kid in all of us is screaming right now! Unfortunately a trailer hasn’t been released as of yet but if this sequel is half as amazing as the original, this movie could be huge.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S reunion

The reunion we’ve all been waiting for is FINALLY happening. (We hope!) The reunion that has been pushed back many times, is now expected to happen in 2021. Matthew Perry aka Chandler Bing took to twitter to inform fans that the Friends reunion will be filmed at the beginning of March. How exciting!!!

Cinderella

You’re probably thinking, another Cinderella movie?  Yes, we’re getting another live action take on the classic tale of Cinderella but this one will be a little different (so we’ve been told!) With pop star Camila Cabello playing the lead role as Cinderella, this version of the classic tale will include brand new, original music. Sounds exciting right? Well it’s gets better! The movie also boasts an incredible cast including Idina Menzel, Missy Elliot, Billy Porter, John Mulaney, and more! Cinderella is set to hit cinema screens February 5th 2021 - fingers crossed!

Nothing is more exciting than the release of a new Disney animated movie. Raya and the Last Dragon follows lead character, Raya on her quest to search for the last dragon in the world. Set for release in March 2021.

Disney’s Cruella

Who else is excited to see the wonderful Emma Stone play the role of Cruella in the new live-action Disney remake? 2021 will see the infamous Disney villain Cruella de Vil gain her own theatrical origin story. This movie will tell Cruella’s backstory - including what happened to her before she wanted to skin 101 puppies to create a coat. Disney’s Cruella is set to be released on May 28th, 2021.

Stranger Things Season 4

Sooo we know that Hopper (David Harbour) is alive (somehow?!) so now we are more desperate than ever to know what exactly is going on. The 4th season is currently in production, having been stopped and started thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, a release date is still unknown.

Will season 4 follow the same pattern of being based around a holiday? With season two falling in line with Halloween and season three focusing on the 4th of July - could season 4 follow suit? Christmas or Easter?  Who knows!

Godzilla vs. Kong

Two of the most famous movie monsters of all time are getting ready to battle in 2021. No specific details about the plot of Godzilla vs Kong have been released but we do know that the film will feature at least one bruising showdown between Godzilla and King Kong. The current release day is set for May 2021 after being pushed back from November 2020 due to the pandemic.

Jungle Cruise

Starring Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt and Jack Whitehall, this new Disney film revolves around a steamboat captain named Frank (Dwayne Johnson) who takes a scientist called Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and her brother McGregor (Jack Whitehall) to find a legendary tree with unparalleled healing powers.

Jungle Cruise was set for release back in July 2020 but due to the pandemic it has now been pushed back to July 2021.

The Mandalorian Season 3

Everybody’s favourite bounty hunter/ father figure will be back for more adventures on Disney+. Although it is still very early stages to have information on the plot and cast of season three, we can only assume that Pedro Pascal will return in the title role and we will be seeing even more cuteness from the little green one.

Season Three of The Mandalorian is aiming for release on Disney+ around Christmas 2021.

Mortal Kombat

The live-action Mortal Kombat movie was set for release back in mid-2020 but it has been pushed back several times due to the ongoing pandemic. The reboot of the video-game-turned-movie franchise is now scheduled for release in April 2021.

Again, like a few other releases set for 2021, there is no Mortal Kombat trailer but producer Todd Garner has promised that a trailer for the live-action is coming in the new year.
