The Mighty Ducks are back! Well, sort of.
Quack. Quack. Quack. Quack.
Who remembers the infamous Mighty Ducks???
If you loved the movies just as much as we did, then you will LOVE what we are about to tell you! The Mighty Ducks are BACK!
A new series called The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers has just landed and is now streaming exclusively on Disney + from today!.
In case you didn’t know already. The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers follows on from the 90s classic. The Mighty Ducks trilogy told the story of a group of ice hockey misfits from Minnesota who were put together by the local legendary figure of Gordon Bombay.
From the success of the 1992 film, The Mighty Ducks led to two movie sequels, an animated series, and a real-life National Hockey League team. Impressive right?
For us, The Mighty Ducks will always hold a special place in our hearts. Watching the almighty ducks take on challenge after challenge was our childhood. So when we heard about the new series, we thought it was about time for a reboot!
What is The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers about?
Set in present day Minnesota, the Mighty Ducks have transformed into an ultra competitive and polished powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12 year old Evan Morrow is cut from the Mighty Ducks team, Evan and his mom Alex, set out to build their own team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of youth sports today. With the help of legend Gordon Bombay, they rediscover the joys of playing ice hockey just for the love of the game.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers shows how the Ducks have come a long way since the 90s and some familiar faces remain from the original films with Emilio Estevez as legendary ice hockey coach, Gordon Bombay.
It’s not just Emilio Estevez who’s making his return to the ice too. Recently, Entertainment Weekly revealed that six members from the original Mighty Ducks movies will be reprising their roles for guest appearances in the sixth episode of the new show. How exciting!!
Set to feature in the episode are Elden Henson as Fulton, Matt Doherty as Averman, Vinny La Russo as Adam Banks, Marguerite Moreau as Connie, Garret Henson as Guy, and Justin Wong as Kenny Wu.
Critics have stated that The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is targeted more towards kids and parents who may be watching alongside them. If you’re looking for that nostalgic buzz, the presence of the legend that is Gordon Bombay will hit you right in the feels.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers - Our first thoughts
A difference that we spotted straight away from watching the first episode of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers was that the Ducks are the antagonists.
From the outset, this series may make you dislike the Mighty Ducks as you see Evan and his mom Alex form a new team. Before you ask, yes the new team are just as awful as the District 5 squad when Gordon Bombay first found them.
Just like the Hawks in the 1992 film,The Mighty Ducks are the popular and profitable team that dominate junior hockey in Minnesota in this show.
We think that this series will spend a lot of time on how Alex and Evan work on putting a new group together and the pros and cons that come with forming a youth ice hockey team.
From just watching the first episode, it is clear that this series has tried to balance out a new narrative with a homage to the movie trilogy. If you’re looking for some nostalgia, you will most definitely enjoy seeing the return of Emilio Estevez.
This series will definitely appeal to a much younger audience than anticipated as some of the humour may be a little young for anybody who grew up with the Mighty Ducks. However, it is still a family-friendly series and is a great watch for any fans of the Mighty Ducks or Ice Hockey in general.
The nostalgia is there but this series allows Game Changers to be its own thing.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is funny and a wholesome take on the Mighty Ducks movies. From what we’ve heard and seen so far, Game Changers is set to be full of great performances from a young cast which look set for great careers in the future.
We can’t wait to see what the next nine episodes will involve and it’s great to see Disney + smashing it once again with another great series.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers consists of 10 episodes and each episode will be available to watch every Friday, exclusively on Disney +.
You can watch the first episode now on the streaming platform.
