In case you didn’t know, this year is Sonic The Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary. Where has the time gone?!

Over the years, Sonic and his friends have captured the hearts of multiple generations and have continued to bring joy to people all over the world.

Sonic The Hedgehog has truly become an entertainment icon across movies, animations, video games, comics and more! 

To celebrate Sonic's 30th anniversary, there are a lot of exciting things happening to honor everybody's favourite hedgehog!

What do we know so far? Well, we know that a Netflix series titled Sonic Prime is in the works for next year and a brand new video game has been announced. Sonic will also be speeding into a number of new games for the first time ever. One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be an exciting year for Sonic fans all over the world!

Back in early 2020, the Sonic The Hedgehog movie was released just before Covid took our cinemas away. For fans like ourselves who have grown up with Sonic The Hedgehog, it was great to see grown ups introducing Sonic to a new generation of fans. The movie was great and made us love Sonic even more! AND rumour has it that the sequel has already begun production and we can’t wait!

On May 27th, in honor of Sonic The Hedgehog’s 30th anniversary, SEGA hosted their first ever ‘Sonic Central’ livestream event which gave fans an exclusive first look at several new partnerships, projects, and events that will be taking place throughout 2021 involving Sega’s iconic hedgehog and friends. 

During the livestream event, SEGA unveiled that they will be celebrating Sonic’s 30th anniversary with a live orchestra event on June 23rd (tomorrow!) which will feature music from Sonic games over the last 30 years! 

When it comes to gaming-related announcements, SEGA announced the following that will be coming to console, PC, and mobile experiences this year.

Sonic Colours: Ultimate - is a remaster of the beloved 2010 classic, Sonic Colors. Sonic Colours: Ultimate is set to release both digitally and physically on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, with a digital - only release on PC via the Epic Game Store. The game is set for release on September 7th, 2021. You can pre-order Sonic Colours:Ultimate now.

SEGA also unveiled a teaser trailer to the two-part animation series titled Sonic Colours: Rise of the Wisps. This will be the first short-form animation that features full dialogue and a voice cast including the return of legendary Sonic voice actor, Roger Craig Smith.

Sonic Origins - A new compiled series that includes Sonic the Hedgehog 1,2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles as well as Sonic CD. If you’re looking for that nostalgic element - this is it. This game play experience will give you non-stop Sonic action alongside fresh content. More information on Sonic Origins will be coming soon.

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary, Sonic will also be making a few special cameos in other games set for release this year, including: 

Two Point Hospital - Build up a hospital from nothing to a masterpiece, this time complete with exclusive Sonic in-game items, character customization options and hospital decor. You can swap staff outfits to celebrate Sonic’s 30th! Items will be available in-game for free on July 22nd.

Tokyo 2020 - Join Sonic in his journey to the 2020 Olympic Games! You can dress your avatar as Sonic and compete in 18 fun-filled Olympic events in ‘Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game’ which is out today! 

From new console experiences, Sonic Colours: Ultimate and Sonic Rangers, further details on Netflix’s Sonic Prime, mobile news, musical events and more! The livestream had fans all over the world geared up for what is looking like one huge celebration!
