Freakier Friday Movie Review ππ
The nostalgia, the music, the casting, the EASTER EGGS!
Letβs talk about the latest release from Disneyβ¦.Freakier Friday!
Like manyΒ Freaky Friday fans, we were both excited and anxious when news broke of a sequel - especially one coming 22 years after the 2003 film. Mostly because sequels are often hit or miss. But this one? It worked perfectly.Β
Did you know that Freaky Friday became THAT iconic, that most people forget that the beloved 2003 Disney movie is actually a remake of the 1976 movie starring Jodie Foster. That said, Freakier Friday understandably had high standards to live up to from millennials all across the globe.Β
The sequel reunites Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as Anna and Tess Coleman, but with a fresh, multigenerational twist. Anna is now a grown woman, about to marry Eric, but her daughter, Harper and Ericβs daughter, Lily, donβt see eye to eye. After an encounter with a psychic, the body swap chaos returns - except this time itβs a four way switch!
Freakier Friday is a story thatβs as funny, heartfelt, and wonderfully ridiculous as the original, but with new emotional depth. The movie deals with modern family dynamics and doesnβt shy away from heavier themes like grief, single parenthood, and blended family struggles. Yet it balances them beautifully with humour and warmth.
Nostalgia Done Right
For anyone who grew up with the 2003 movie, this sequel is a love letter. Itβs peak nostalgia - the kind that makes you feel like a teenager again, but with the perspective (and emotional safety) of adulthood. From the return of Pink Slip (yes, Take Me Away and Ultimate are now back on repeat) to the many Easter Eggs -which we were totally not ready for!
βMake Good Choices!β, β¦Baby One More Time, October 3rd and MEREDITH BLAKE. Nobody prepared us for that.
Seeing every major cast member from the original back for this sequel is a true testament to how much the story meant to them - and us.
Jamie Lee Curtis is, as always, an icon. A comedy genius and rightly deserved, a Disney legend. Her energy and enthusiasm is just a joy to watch and she delivers on every front and her talent is unmatched. Lindsay Lohanβs return to the big screen feels like she never left, sliding seamlessly back into Annaβs shoes. Their chemistry is just as electric as it was two decades ago - on screen and off. Watching them together again is an absolute delight. The supporting cast also shines, with the younger generation bringing their own spark without overshadowing the OG characters.
Why It Works
Freakier Friday perfectly honored the original while standing on its own, with heartfelt moments, humour, and so much charm. Thereβs no shortage of silly moments too (Anna in the record store, Tessβs lip-plumping disaster, the chaotic food fight), just to name a few.Β Sure, some may say there are too many cheesy moments but not every movie plot has to be so serious!
As adults, life can feel so heavy and testing, and this movie brought back that carefree happiness that we once felt as kids.Β
The mix of awkward moments, quick comebacks, and ridiculous situations kept us entertained the whole way through. You can really feel they had a great time making this movie and it shows!
Final Thoughts
Freakier Friday is the sequel we didnβt know we needed, until now. It doesnβt try to reinvent Freaky Friday, it honours it.Β
Whether you grew up with the 2003 version, a newcomer to the franchise, or simply in need of a feel-good movie, Freakier Friday delivers.
With everything thatβs going on in the world, we could all use more movies like this - movies that make us laugh, remind us of simpler times, and bring us together.
We came to realise that the sequel didnβt need to meet any unrealistic expectations to be a success. It left us feeling uplifted, nostalgic and genuinely happy, and we suspect it will do the same for audiences of all ages (and not just millennials).Β

Freakier Friday is out in cinemas everywhere now.
