Thor: Love And Thunder Movie Review
From oversized screaming goats and angsty enchanted weapons to The Mighty Thor, here's what we thought of the latest addition to the MCU, Thor: Love and Thunder!
Thor: Love and Thunder is the character's fourth standalone movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sees everybody's favourite God back on the big screen facing off the maleficent Gorr the God Butcher and reunited with his former lover, Dr. Jane Foster.
After seeing reviews prior to watching the new movie, we went in with pretty low expectations but we thought that it was far from as bad as people were making it out to be.
AND Marvel have once again smashed it again at the box office!
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, Thor's numbers are already in line with most of the biggest movies of 2022, grossing more than Top Gun: Maverick which earned $126.7 million during its three-day weekend. It's also above The Batman's $134 million debut.
What's the plot?
Thor: Love and Thunder finds the God of Thunder on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced - a quest for inner peace. But Thor's retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (played by Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who to Thor's surprise, wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of God Butcher's vengeance and stop him before it's too late.
Characters
With Taika Waititi directing, it's fun to see Taika's spin on these characters. With such a star studded cast too!
Gorr the God Butcher is one of the best Marvel villains in a long time and Christian Bale portrayed the character perfectly. We also found him quite scary and he gave us Voldemort vibes. Also, did anybody else not realise Gorr was played by Christian Bale until the credits started rolling?
Another addition to this movie or should we say return is Jane Foster who finally becomes The Mighty Thor. Natalie Portman is just brilliant and can do no wrong in our eyes.
From Melissa McCarthy to Matt Damon and Russell Crowe, there were quite a few celebrity cameos in this movie. We thought that Russell Crowe as Zeus in particular made a hilarious addition to the cast.
We found ourselves intrigued by the new characters and particularly more connected to Thor as he is becoming more connectable as character. Despite being a "God", the humour in this movie made Thor's character more human, bringing him a lot closer to heart.
Another character we absolute love in the Thor movies is Korg! I'm sure you can all agree with us when we say that Korg is one of the most precious characters to grace the MCU and we need to protect him at all costs. He truly represents the magic and the joy the MCU provides, making him a character that hopefully we will see more of in the future.
Something that also stood out to us was how empowering the children were in this movie as we've never seen this done before and it was awesome! We particularly loved the laser eyed stuffed bunny!
We also have to give the gigantic screaming goats a moment too. Who would've thought that we would see Thor being flown through space by two giant goats. A sight we never thought we would ever see.
It was great to see the guardians of the galaxy too! Would've liked to have seen them more though.
Final thoughts
Ultimately, Love and Thunder is a like a breath of fresh air. This movie brings the love AND the thunder.
If you're a big fan of Thor Ragnarok, you'll feel right at home with the newest Thor adventure.
Some may say that there was far too much cheese in this movie, but we are here for it!
The comedy can be seen as a little over the top in parts but it's still a great movie.
Not going to lie, we found Thor's love triangle with his current weapon Storm breaker and his old hammer Mjolnir a little strange... However, Chris Hemsworth runs with the concept making and makes what was utterly absurd ideas, workable.
Thor: Love and Thunder offers enough laughs and heart to win over fans. It's fun, light-hearted and dealt with pain, loss and death in a healthy way.
Oh and did we mention that it has a great soundtrack? It's most definitely following in the footsteps of Guardians of the Galaxy in that department!
Despite the mixed reviews, we recommend going to see this movie. At the end of the day it's what you make of the movie.
From its goofy humour to creative and visually stunning new environments, this movie felt cosmic and Asgardian in the Thor-est way possible. It's well paced and perfectly set up for future movies in the MCU.
Just remember, if you are planning to go and see Thor: Love and Thunder, don't take it too seriously.
Yes this movie is a little slapstick than the others, but we are assuming that this won't be the last time we see this from the MCU and it seems to be paving the way for the evolution of the cinematic universe.
This movie is a solid addition to the franchise and we are really excited to see where Thor goes next!
Thor: Love and Thunder is out in cinemas worldwide now.
